Apart from the obvious DB table mode… I can switch to Custom field.

Interesting, but how is this going to work? Which custom field and from which context? The current article or the current object the field is used in ? Do you have a use case or example?

When you switch to Custom Field mode, you can select the field type. This is similar to Joomla custom fields.

However, it provides more control over field settings and how it (both in forms and as value) is displayed.

For example, Text Field has settings like Addon Before and Addon After. For subform field, you can display as Table. For Url field, you can display as QR Code.
